HELEN CAVE
The Bible states clearly that God “desires all men to be saved and to come to the
knowledge of the truth.” I Timothy 2:4. We know that God is ever working to bring
all men to Himself. In addition, in Matthew 28:19, Jesus invites us to participate
in the working out of His good purpose for all mankind: “Go therefore and make
disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son
and the Holy Spirit.” Moreover, James debunks the myth that Christianity consists
merely of attending church, praying, fasting; attending to one’s own righteousness.
Rather, we are challenged to demonstrate our faith in Jesus Christ as it relates to
others. “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to
visit orphans and widows in their distress” James 1:27.
I am eager to take part in the lifestyle of evangelism and “dying to oneself,” to which
I feel called by Jesus every day. Having never seen third world poverty first-hand, I
am anticipating that God will use this trip to Haiti to give me MORE of his heart for
the children and the poor. I want to return forever changed, with images burned
into my heart and mind that produce radical living, giving, and evangelism. Finally,
I hope that God will use the exposure to physical poverty in Haiti to allow me to see
my own spiritual poverty – that I would acknowledge the depths of my need and
experience a new-found understanding of and thankfulness for Jesus’ sacrifice for
me.
